Getting HANA’ed

15 Jan

I think I could not have stayed without writing this as words were floating in the territory of mind.

It all began with reading blogs in SCN mostly from Vijay, that I came to know about HANA. It did not leave me as being an ABAPer, performance optimization remains at the core of  whatever I code. So the quick interpretation was “Yeah! now that HANA is there I may not boggle much to write optimized coding’. With time I have realized that the first assumption is not very correct. Performance optimization will still be required. 🙂 The only bad thing that happened is I did not push much to attend tech-ed 2011 as I missed the chance to attend  hands-on-session on HANA. That would have atleast given me a little more clearer picture. Now that’s OK.

So on and so forth, many blogs on HANA can now be seen on SCN. I don’t know how many have I read or how many of them will really help me when I get a chance to work on HANA.  HANA on R/3 is yet to be released. The materials available to get a sneak peek of HANA are little too lengthy and require a lot of time and effort to get the detailed idea. (May be I am lazy) .I know of the site ‘implement HANA’ , few SAP notes, quick guide books on HANA for developers etc.

Finally, came the Online HANA Innojam contest and good that I read about the event. I had already expressed my interest in doing any POC on HANA to my bosses. I was directed to the team in the org. who does POC on new technologies. I was happy to know that most of them had attended tech-ed and has a first hand experience of HANA. I spread the word about the contest and things were taken to the next step. One of the greatest challenge is to manage time out of the hectic schedules both mine and the team. No wonder project work peaks at the time when we want to get involved somewhere else too. 🙂  I think I am prepared for that. I took the ownership of reading all the information available and letting team know what have we to do.

Well, contest said solve a business scenario which we think can be solved much faster by HANA compared to the existing system. We had a similar scenario. But then when I see the rest of the ideas, they are very generic and wide. Many resembles concept of Data Mining. I really wonder how will they be solved.

In the last meeting that I had with the team, we had an intense discussion on how are we going to take it further. Many doubts, few of them got answered via FAQ’s on HANA uploaded in the wiki. I still see it as a challenge because we are a team of versatile people working on different areas . I am happy to be the part of a different team. Collaboration at the same time will be the major factor but then if there is no challenge there is no fun. The best statement said was ‘WE WILL LEARN TOGETHER’ by the hot shot of the team.

I am yet to understand if I am going to get a chance to code something that will execute in HANA or will it be entirely based on the concept of RDBMS , creating queries like in SQL or what?  I may try my luck again to devote sometime in understanding developer’s cook book but not sure to what extent or may be some more blogs on HANA by Blag. Hope I get clearer. But the only thing I am sure of is whatever we do, I will understand each bit of it.

Happy Sunday!

6 am Impact

9 Jan

Ms. Kumud Singh is having a great beginning of 2012. The first week seemed to be as productive as possible. She usually ran out of time, made big plans only to find not even 20% is accomplished. Days seemed not to have enough time even to complete the basic work to be done on weekends. Friends knew that any phone call before 11am will go unanswered. Any plans on weekends needed special push so that she does not break the schedule. Some even took advantage of being late saying ‘Is Kumud ready’ 🙂 ? which was invariably ‘ No’.

At work she has always been sincere in completing any deliverable well before the deadline set. But she did absolutely nothing apart from completing the work perfectly. She remained engrossed in the same lifestyle until there was a shocking realization ‘What and how much is she learning’? Getting accolades/awards does not mean the path followed is correct. Getting stuck in the cubicle with just the work always, is certainly not a bright thing. Things moved and she realized better aspects. But realizing is not enough until it’s implemented.

She likes reading books, visiting places, movies, meeting friends etc. but then no time. After waking up at irregular timings like 10am, 11am, 12… certainly not much time is left. She read many motivational books and well understood that Early Mornings can have a great impact on one’s living style. She tried but only to do it for a day or two and then the same old routine.

Then one day, she received a phone call started with a chirpy conversation but ended on far more than a serious note. It was from her brother-in-law, she respects enormously first for his attitude and then for his astounding achievements. He was very precise in saying that she is not utilizing her resources at all. She may be having a good attitude but that’s not enough. He was very explicit in mentioning that she may get married in the near future and the time she will have for herself will reduce further. He made it sound scary by using ‘Independent days can now be counted’. Help yourself before you help others. If she doesn’t organize herself now, she may not be able to do that any other time. I think he wants her to act, act and just act NOW. It was a long conversation which ended up in a plan.

Well, the conversation was well worth it. As she is up at 6 am every day after the call. Days seem to have enough time to do prioritized activities. The most quality time in the morning is from 7am to 8am which involves brisk morning walk followed by a short meditation. It gives wonderful/kicking start to the day. Time, all of a sudden seems to be the most important resource she has. She thinks 6am can be added in her list of achievements.

Ahhhh!!! I feel so relaxed and refreshed after writing this.
